QR Code Menu for Restaurants: Setup Guide for Indian Restaurant Owners

24 May 2026 · 5 min read

How to create a QR code menu for your restaurant in India. Print it for tables, display boards, and packaging - customers scan and order directly.

A QR code menu is one of the easiest ways to modernize your restaurant without spending much. Print the QR on a table tent, stick it on your counter glass, put it on your packaging - customers scan it and your entire menu opens instantly on their phone.

No app required. No login. Just scan and browse.

This guide covers what you need, how to create one, and how to display it effectively in your restaurant.

What is a QR code menu?

A QR code is a scannable square pattern that opens a link when a customer's phone camera points at it. For restaurants, that link goes to your digital menu page.

When a customer scans your QR code:

  • Their phone camera recognizes it (works on iPhone and Android without a separate app)
  • A notification appears to open the link
  • The menu loads in their browser in 1-2 seconds

From there, they can browse categories, search items, filter veg/non-veg, and - if you've enabled it - add to cart and order via WhatsApp.

Why QR code menus work well in India

Everyone has a smartphone with a camera QR scanning is built into the default camera app on every modern Android and iPhone. Customers don't need to download a QR reader app anymore.

Hygiene expectations have shifted Post-COVID, many customers prefer not handling physical menus that dozens of others have touched. A QR menu is naturally contactless.

Paper menus go stale Prices change. Items go out of stock. Seasonal specials come and go. With a paper menu, every change means a reprint. With a QR code linking to a digital menu, you update once and every QR code everywhere points to the current version automatically.

It doubles as marketing A QR code on your packaging, takeaway bags, or bill inserts brings customers back to your menu. They might share it with family. It keeps your restaurant in their phone.

What you need to set up a QR code menu

  1. A digital menu - your menu hosted at a URL (like zapmenu.in/your-restaurant)
  2. A QR code - generated from that URL
  3. A printed display - table tent, standee, counter sticker, or vinyl board

That's it. If your menu is already on ZapMenu, the QR code is generated automatically - you just download and print it.

How to create your QR code menu on ZapMenu

Step 1: Set up your menu Sign up at zapmenu.in and add your restaurant details and menu items. Your menu gets a public URL like zapmenu.in/spice-garden-vijayawada.

Step 2: Download your QR code From the dashboard, you can download your QR code as an image file. It's pre-linked to your menu URL.

Step 3: Print it You have a few options:

  • Table tent - a folded card that stands on the table (A5 size works well). Print in-house on thick paper or get it done at a local print shop for Rs 3-Rs 8 per piece.
  • Counter sticker - a laminated sticker at your billing counter or display window
  • A4 display board - framed on the wall near the entrance
  • On packaging - add the QR to your takeaway boxes, bags, or bill slips

A local print shop (most cities have Xerox shops that do this) can print table tents for Rs 5-Rs 15 per piece with lamination. For 20 tables, you're spending Rs 100-Rs 300 total.

Table tent design tips

Your QR code shouldn't just float on a blank page. Here's what makes a table tent work:

Include a short instruction "Scan to view our full menu" - customers who've never scanned a menu before need this prompt.

Add your logo and restaurant name The table tent is also a brand touchpoint. Make it look like it belongs in your restaurant.

Mention WhatsApp ordering if you've enabled it "Scan to order on WhatsApp" is a stronger call to action than just "scan for menu."

Keep it clean One QR code. One instruction. One logo. Don't crowd it with text. The QR needs to be at least 3cm x 3cm to scan reliably.

Where else to put your QR code

Once you have the image file, put it everywhere:

  • Instagram bio - "Scan our menu" with a QR in your bio image
  • WhatsApp status - your existing customers see it
  • Takeaway packaging - boxes, bags, tissue paper inserts
  • Bill receipts - "Order again? Scan our menu" on the bill
  • Delivery boxes - customers who re-order are your best customers
  • Google Business profile - add a photo of your QR code display
  • Food delivery inserts - a small card in Swiggy/Zomato orders directing customers to order directly next time

Frequently asked questions

Do customers need an app to scan the QR code? No. On iPhone, the default Camera app scans QR codes. On Android, the Camera app or Google Lens scans them. No separate QR reader needed.

What if my QR code gets damaged or the link changes? On ZapMenu, your QR code always points to your permanent menu URL (zapmenu.in/your-slug). Your slug doesn't change, so reprinting is only needed if the physical code gets damaged - not when you update your menu.

Can I use the QR code if I cancel my subscription? Your public menu remains accessible even on an expired subscription - your customers can always view it. Editing access requires an active subscription.

Can I have different QR codes for dine-in vs delivery? Currently both use the same menu link. The ordering flow adapts based on how the customer is using it - they can choose delivery or pickup in the order flow.

The cost of setting up a QR code menu is roughly the price of one order of biryani. The return is every customer who scans it and orders directly, plus the time saved not reprinting menus every time prices change.
